Boys' Basketball (23-4): Trounced Garden Grove 63-32 Friday in first round of CIF Div. II-AA playoffs. The newly-crowned Bay League champs saw 13 players get in the scoring column, led by Ryan Mollins with 16. Senior wing guard Dylan Mathis had only three points, but brought the house down with an electric two-handed jam in the third quarter.
Upended La Serna of Whittier (26-2) 67-57 on the road Tuesday. Dijon Thompson scored 10 of his 20 points in the decisive third quarter as the Sea Hawks fought back from a 36-33 halftime deficit. Senior Sam Chance, inserted into the lineup to start the second half, provided a spark, helping to neutralize La Serna's small, quick point guard.
Redondo shot 57 percent from the field for the game, overcoming 10 Lancer three pointers. Mollins led the Hawks with 22 points. Andrew Zahn, who was 4-for-4 from the field against a collapsing zone defense, finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Walter White added 10 points and seven boards.
Next: Friday at 7:30 p.m. at site to be determined versus Moorpark, an upset winner over fourth-seeded Pasadena.

Wrestling (4-1): No Sea Hawk advanced to the Master's Meet out of the CIF Div. V championships held over the weekend. Freshman Edwin Rodriguez had the best finish, placing sixth in the 105-pound class. Season complete.
Girls' Water Polo (20-7): Dominated Saddleback 12-0 last Wednesday in wild card round of CIF Div. IV playoffs. Sarah Valencia scored four goals in support of Malia Wagner, who notched her seventh shutout of the season. Lost to top-seeded Santa Margarita 7-2 Saturday in first-round action. Betsy Schroeder and Valencia scored for Redondo, which got 12 saves from Wagner. Season complete. Valencia and Lara Williams were named to the all-Bay League first team. Wagner, Roxanne Raksnys, Laura Miller and Schroeder were second team selections.
Boys' Basketball (15-12): Lost at Burbank 58-51 last Wednesday in first round of CIF Div. I-A playoffs. The Mustangs led by four at halftime and by one with less than three minutes left, but could not hold on. Senior Taraz Lee scored 12 points in his final game. Juniors Jacob Insler and DeWayne Morris added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Season complete.
Girls' Basketball (18-9): Crushed Mission Viejo 57-32 Saturday in second round of Div. I-A playoffs. Costa built a 30-point lead after three periods behind Tara Whiteside, who tossed in 31 points and added 10 boards, five steals and four blocks. Hilary Stromath added seven points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Next: played Edison yesterday at home.
Boys' Soccer (19-5-4): Lost 4-1 in overtime at Loyola Friday in first round of CIF Div. II playoffs. The Mustangs led 1-0 at halftime, thanks to a goal from Joel Cambra. But the Cubs tied the game in the second half and scored three more goals in overtime after two Costa players received red cards and were ejected. Season complete.
Girls' Soccer (24-2-3): Blanked California 4-0 at home Saturday in Div. II playoffs. Shannon Cross got the Mustangs off quickly with a goal in the game's first minute. Shut out Cypress 2-0 in second round game. Kelly Blais scored a goal five minutes into the game. See accompanying story. Wrestling (1-3): Senior Jon Cordero won a CIF Div. III championship in the 217-pound division Saturday defeating Loara's Joe Ellis 6-4. Cordero advances to the Master's Meet Friday and Saturday at Fountain Valley. No other Mustang advanced.

Salazar shines at L.A. meet
Mira Costa track and cross country runner Jon Salazar made a name for himself at Saturday's L.A. Invitational track meet, winning Heat 1 in the 880 in the high school division. Salazar's time was 2:03.4. Costa's Luke Gilroy and Jeremy Davis ran well in the two-mile races, placing 10th and 13th, respectively, in their heats.
Karros gets extension
Manhattan Beach resident Eric Karros signed a three-year extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday, reportedly for $30 million. Karros had a career year for the blue last year, batting .304 with 34 homers and 112 RBIs.
Spoilers win again
The Spoilers 17s Club Volleyball team won its second major tournament of the season, sweeping 10 matches to win the Las Vegas Invitational featuring many of the nation's finest teams. The Spoilers feature four Mira Costa students and are coached by Hermosa resident Pat Zartman, whose standout daughter Chrissie attends Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance.

Hermosa Beach Volleyball Classes: Beach volleyball classes begin Saturday Feb. 26 at the courts south of the Hermosa Beach pier. Classes for those in the beginner and intermediate levels meet every Saturday for six weeks from 10:15-11:45 a.m. A youth class for ages 8-12 meets from 10:45-11:45 a.m. The cost is $38 for adults and $32 for youth, but Hermosa residents get a $2 discount. Manhattan Beach 3-on-3 hoops: The Manhattan Beach Parks & Rec. Dept. is sponsoring a 3-on-3 basketball tournament March 11-12 at the Live Oak Park basketball courts.
