With the rainy season in full swing, the City of Redondo Beach is urging residents to be extra judicious about protecting the ocean from contaminants carried through storm drains.
Studies have shown, says city civil engineer Mike Shay, that individuals underestimate their roles in contributing to storm drain pollution of the ocean. With that in mind, Shay advises residents to take the following steps to prevent pollution:
* Properly dispose of all solvents and household cleaners, including empty containers, at the city's community household hazardous waste collection center at 2420 Mariner Ave. Or use the 'Round-Ups' of such materials conducted by Los Angeles County.
* Use a rake or broom, not a hose spray, to collect to collect and dispose of debris. Pour mop water in a sink or toilet, not in the street. Don't apply garden chemicals during a rainstorm.
* Use yard trimmings and leaves as compost. Dispose of pet waste in trashcans. Cover all trashcans.
Repair vehicle leaks; use kitty litter to absorb spills; take used motor oil to collection centers, and for center locations call 1-800-CLEANUP.
For more information about the county's storm drain pollution prevention program call 1-888-CLEAN-LA. For more information about Redondo programs call Shay at (310) 318-0661.
