About Town Hermosa Beach

Officers memorial

The Hermosa Beach Police Department is urging taxpayers to help maintain the California Peace Officers Memorial by marking a check-off box in their 1999 state tax returns.

The bronze and granite memorial on the Capitol grounds in Sacramento bears the names of more than 1,300 officers who have died in the line of duty statewide.

Included is the name of Hermosa Officer Gary Dean Moss, who suffered fatal injuries in a June, 1982, collision while he was pursuing a speeding motorcyclist. Moss is the only officer killed in the line of duty in the city's 93-year history.

The accident occurred when a motorist pulled out in front of Moss's motorcycle. Moss died shortly afterward, and the motorist was convicted of driving under the influence, Officer Paul Wolcott said.

Voluntary contributions of $2.50 by California taxpayers will be used to maintain the memorial.

Kindergarten roundup

Hermosa View School, 1800 Prospect Ave., will begin Kindergarten registration for the 2000-2001 academic year 12:45 p.m. Thursday, March 16.

To qualify for the class of '01, kindergartners must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 2, 2000. A birth certificate, immunization records and proof of Hermosa residence will be required.

Parents can receive a flyer about the roundup meeting by calling 798-1680 and leaving their name and address.
