Former Hermosa superintendent passes away

by Kevin Cody

Dr. Andrew Joyce, Hermosa Beach schools superintendent from 1970 to 1978, died Feb. 1 from melanoma. He was 83.

Joyce was credited with bringing a new, higher level of professionalism to Hermosa's schools. He introduced early childhood education, teacher competency requirements, enrichment programs and management-by-objective procedures.

He also oversaw the district's response to a rapid decline in enrollment. Prospect Heights School was closed, Pier Avenue Junior High was sold to the city, and work on the new Middle School was begun.

Joyce was born in 1916 in Greenock, Scotland and received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Glasgow. Following service in World War II, he moved to Pasadena with his wife Irene and became a school principal. From 1965 to 1970 he served as director of elementary education in the Palos Verdes School District.

Joyce is survived by Irene, his wife of 55 years; a daughter, Kim Leadon; sons Glen, Eric, and Peter, and six grandchildren. Services were held Feb. 4 at Green Hills Memorial Park in Palos Verdes.ER
