Boys' Basketball (19-5): Lost 86-65 at home to Compton Centennial last Wednesday. Ryan Mollins led Redondo with 23 points. Turned aside North Torrance 86-71 Friday. Dijon Thompson, Andrew Zahn and Mollins combined for 54 points. Walter White turned an ankle in the opening moments of the second half. Dropped 66-62 decision to Bay League champ Inglewood at home Tuesday. The Hawks, playing without White, were outscored 9-0 in the game's final three minutes.
Girls' Basketball (20-5): Eased past Compton Centennial 71-16 last Wednesday. Freshman center Danielle Payne led the onslaught with 17 points and eight rebounds. Lost 53-51 to North Torrance Friday, Redondo's first conference loss of the season. Jackie Packard led the Hawks with 17 points. Scoring and rebounding leader Ofa Tulikihihifo, playing with a broken thumb on her shooting hand, was held to six points. Pounded Inglewood 85-50 Tuesday to clinch the Bay League title. Five players scored in double figures, led by Packard's 19.
Boys' Soccer (3-20): Lost 1-0 to West Torrance last Wednesday. Knocked off Beverly Hills 2-1 Friday. Senior Ryan Romero scored both goals, including the game winner in overtime. Challenged powerful Mira Costa before losing 2-1 Tuesday. Romero scored Redondo's lone goal.
Girls' Soccer (13-10-1): Fell 4-2 to West Torrance last Wednesday. Shut out Beverly Hills 2-0 Friday. Lindsey Green and Lindsay Dierling scored for the Hawks. Lost 5-3 shootout to Mira Costa Tuesday.
Wrestling (4-0): Results of last Thursday's match versus Peninsula not provided.
Girls' Water Polo (17-6): Lost close one, 8-6, at Santa Monica last Wednesday. Laura Miller and Roxanne Raksnys scored twice each for the Hawks.
Mustang round-up
Boys' Basketball (14-11): Lost another close one to El Segundo, 39-35 last Wednesday. The Eagles outscored Costa 25-19 in the second half. Jacob Insler led the Mustangs with 12 points. Edged Torrance 39-38 Friday on Insler's lay-up with seven seconds left. DeWayne Morris led Costa with 15 points. Defeated Culver City 48-40 Tuesday, avenging loss earlier in the season. Taraz Lee posted 11 points and 12 boards for the Mustangs.
Girls' Basketball (16-9): Trounced El Segundo 68-18 last Wednesday. Freshmen Megan Whiteside and Tavi Shabestari combined for 23 points in the rout. Took sole possession of first place in the Ocean League with 49-41 win at Torrance Friday. Tara Whiteside scored 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Mustangs. Fell into first place tie in league with 56-55 loss at Culver City Tuesday. Adaoro Okwo had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Costa.
Boys' Soccer (19-3-4): Edged Beverly Hills 1-0 last Wednesday. Derrick Schuster scored in support of Costa goalie Alonzo Vargas, who recorded his 10th shutout of the season. Lost 2-1 in overtime to South Torrance Friday, ending the Mustangs' Bay League title hopes. Edwin Lloja scored Costa's lone goal. Edged Redondo 2-1 Tuesday behind goals from seniors Joel Cambra and J.G. Mazzotta.
Girls' Soccer (22-2-3): Blanked Beverly Hills 3-0 last Wednesday. Shannon Cross, Kelly Blais and Sarah Gelb found the back of the net for Costa. Clinched Bay League title with 0-0 tie with South Torrance Friday. Chelsea McCarthy notched the shutout for the Mustangs. Outscored Redondo 5-3 on Tuesday. Sophomore sensations Ydun Donahoe and Sara Davis combined for three goals.
Wrestling (1-3): Lost 38-28 to Santa Monica in Bay League season finale last Thursday. See accompanying story.
Girls' Water Polo (12-11): Handled Culver City 15-5 at home last Wednesday. Katay Kocsis had five goals for the Mustangs. Megan Carney added two goals and seven steals. Lost 7-1 to Villa Park last Thursday at the Irvine Women's Southern California Championships. Lost twice Friday at Southern California Championships, 8-6 to Dos Pueblos and 6-2 to Costa Mesa. Defeated Chadwick 8-7 in overtime Saturday. Natalia Mole scored the game winner.
Community Sports
Redondo Surfing Classes: A six-week surfing class for adults (ages 14 and up) begins Sunday, Feb. 20 at 8 a.m. on the beach in Redondo. Learn water safety, efficient board handling skills, basic surfing techniques and tricks. The class costs $120. A soft foam board is required and can be rented for $60.
