The Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a "Leadership Redondo Beach" educational program to bring together prospective city leaders who want to learn more about how the city and its government work.
The program isn't cheap. Participants pay $595. But that tuition may be in line with the benefits. The leadership sessions will be held over several months, from March to December. Class size is limited and applicants will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis, so those interested should apply right away. The deadline to apply is Feb. 21. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by Feb. 28.
The day-long sessions will cover the following topics: history, health, public safety, city government, media, technology, economic development and a Los Angeles County tour. The sessions will begin at 8 a.m. and run to 5 p.m. Sessions will be held on the second Friday of each month.
Redondo Beach city councilman John Parsons is acting as vice president of the leadership program.
The Friends of Redondo Beach Dog Park, Inc., which was instrumental in turning Dominguez Park into the South Bay's only off-leash dog park, will hold its monthly Pooch-A-Rama dog adoption day on Sun., Feb. 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The dog park is located at 190th Street and Flagler Lane. Booths will be set up for each rescue group that wants to hold an adoption to do so. Past adoption days have been successful, according to Friends chairman Sandie Rhodes. Rhodes said at the last adoption fair several rescue groups ran out of dogs.
Each dog adoption fair includes presentations by veterinarians and other professionals to advise new dog owners on how to care for their pets. Each visitor at the fair can receive a 'Good Owner Goody Bag' of dog treats and coupons from pet merchants.
"The dog and cat overpopulation is a horrendously sad issue," said Rhodes. "Perhaps if other cities see how a small effort can produce great results, these group adoption fairs will take off elsewhere."
All dogs for adoption must be certified in good health with spaying and neutering already done and legally required shots and vaccinations performed.ER
