Breakwall Sunday

Story and photos by Kevin Cody

A good week of solid overhead surf turned into a great week Sunday when a surprise northwest swell brought triple overhead waves to the South Bay. El Porto and Hermosa were closed out. The Redondo Avenues were rideable, but lacked size. And that left the Redondo Breakwall, where solid 12-foot faces leapt up to 15-foot-plus with the breakwall bounce.

Maybe it was because he was the only one wearing a helmet. But Leo Nordine surfed his home break like it was just another, local wind swell. If there had been a contest Nordine would have been called out of the water for exceeding the wave limit. Daniel Montoya almost matched Nordine's wave count by picking off the inside rights, including a toothy, cavernous barrel. An outgunned Jude Lurhson but made the best of it by hotdogging when everyone else was taking the high, straight line. Michael Luhrson picked off the biggest right of the day. And Boogaloo's Steve Roberts laid claim to the biggest left of the day. But that was before Frosty, sitting in his customary outside position, stumbled into what may be the wave of the winter. No one begrudged him his luck because that morning the countdown began on Frosty's big wave days. Sunday morning Frosty became a grandpa for the first time. ER
