Skate Day

The Hermosa Beach Skate Park at Pier Avenue and Ardmore offers a special event, "Skate With a Semi-Pro Day" Sunday, Feb. 27 in two sessions beginning 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

In the one-hour sessions, which cost $20, kids 4 to 10 years old will get pointers from professionally sponsored skaters. A signed waiver and full safety gear will be required.

Registration deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 15. To register, call 318-0280.

The park's regular school-season hours are 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 7 p.m. weekends.

Lovers unite

A last reminder that the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation's fourth annual Valentine's Dinner Dance and Auction is Saturday at Pointe 705, located at 705 Pier Ave.

The public schools' largest fund-raiser of the year will feature a live and silent auction, gourmet dinner, music and dancing. Last year's event, a sellout, raised more than $60,000.

Items to be auctioned this year include a one-week trip to Aspen, Colo., a ride aboard the Goodyear Blimp, tickets to a Staples Center luxury suite and a shoe worn by Los Angeles Laker Shaquille O'Neal.

Tickets are $100 and are available at public school offices or by calling 372-1785 or 374-0193.

The Education Foundation currently provides the salary for a science teacher for fourth and fifth grades, a fine arts teacher for middle school grades, computer hardware and software for the libraries at Hermosa Valley and Hermosa View schools, and technology staff development for grades K-8.

Library closure

The Hermosa branch of the Los Angeles County Library will be closed Saturday, Feb. 26 until Thursday, April 6 for a long-awaited refurbishing that will include new carpeting, lighting and tile work.

During the closure, Friends of the Library will provide a book drop at City Hall.
