Boys' Basketball (18-3): Edged Peninsula 59-53 last Wednesday. Dijon Thompson scored 18 points for the Hawks, which came from behind in the fourth quarter to get the win. Routed Morningside 81-47 Friday, outscoring the Monarchs 51-22 in the first half. Andrew Zahn led Redondo with 18 points, while Ryan Mollins added 15. Eased past South Torrance 78-50 at home Monday. Walter White led the attack with 17 points.

Girls' Basketball (18-4): Dominated Peninsula 46-22 last Wednesday. Ofa Tulikihihifo and Jackie Packard combined for 35 points for Redondo. Took control of Bay League race with 70-65 road win over Morningside Friday. Tulikihihifo had 24 points and 22 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Jennifer Owens added 15 points, including two free throws that sealed the victory. Smashed South Torrance 77-24 Monday. Jasmine Arjasbi had 16 points, while Danielle Payne added 15.

Boys' Soccer (2-18): Lost 3-0 to Torrance last Wednesday. The Hawks battled to a scoreless draw in the first half before yielding three second-half goals. Lost 2-1 to South Torrance Friday. Kyle Callahan scored the Redondo goal. Lost 2-0 to Peninsula Monday.

Girls' Soccer (12-8-1): Pounded Torrance 5-1 last Wednesday. Candace Stalder, Courtney Cambra, Lindsey Green and Courtney Medina scored for Redondo. Tied South Torrance 0-0 Friday. Goalie Sarah Butterfield recorded nine saves for Redondo.

Wrestling (4-0): Dominated Beverly Hills 69-12 last Thursday. Edwin Rodriguez (103 pounds), Albert Johnson (125), Cameron Webb (152), Chris Watson (160), Sean McNett (180), Mitch Velasquez (215) and Ruben Mendoza (heavyweight) all pinned their opponents.

Girls' Water Polo (17-5): Clinched playoff berth with 11-0 spanking of Culver City last Wednesday. See accompanying story. Blanked San Marino 12-0 Monday. Sarah Valencia had four goals in support of goalie Malia Wagner, who notched her sixth shutout.

Mustang round-up

Boys' Basketball (12-10): Pounded Hawthorne 50-32 Friday. DeWayne Morris led the Mustangs with 13 points and nine boards. Lost 39-38 to league leading West Torrance Monday. Jeff Kandell scored five points in the fourth quarter to lead a Costa comeback, which fell just short.

Girls' Basketball (14-8): Dominated Hawthorne 62-25 Friday. Tara Whiteside tied her season high with 35 points. She also added 10 rebounds, six steals and four assists for Costa. Improved to 9-1 in Ocean League with 62-47 win at West Torrance Monday. Whiteside had 30 points, while Hilary Stromath added 16 points and 12 boards for Costa.

Boys' Soccer (17-2-4): Edged North Torrance 3-2 in overtime last Wednesday. Derrick Schuster scored the game winner. Edwin Lloja and Tommy Britton also scored for Costa. Blanked West Torrance 1-0 Friday. A Schuster breakaway goal in the fourth minute was all Costa goalie Alonzo Vargas needed. Vargas notched his ninth shutout. Doubled Torrance 4-2 Monday. Schuster scored twice.

Girls' Soccer (20-2-2): Blanked North Torrance 2-0 last Wednesday behind goals from Cosette Smith and Shannon Cross. Chelsea McCarthy notched her third shutout in league play. Crushed defending Bay League champs West Torrance 4-0 Friday. Costa got goals from Jamie Grass, Crystal James, Kelly Blais and Lindsey Veris. Smashed Torrance 7-0 Monday. Seven different players scored, including Ydun Donahoe, Amanda Cross and Krystal Scarcliff, as the Mustangs improved their league record to 9-0-1.

Wrestling (1-2): Outpointed West Torrance 37-25 last Thursday. Dan Perkins (171 pounds) won the pivotal match for the Mustangs. Jon Cordero (215) pinned his opponent in 1:24.

Girls' Water Polo (10-8): Pounded Beverly Hills 17-6 last Wednesday. Katay Kocsis tossed in eight goals, while Megan Carney added three and Natalia Mole two for the Mustangs. Defeated Arcadia 15-3 at home Monday. Morgan Laughlin, Kelly Morgan and Robyn Suddeth scored twice apiece for the Mustangs' balanced scoring attack.

Community Sports

Redondo Surfing Classes: A six-week surfing class for adults (ages 14 and up) begins Sunday, Feb. 20 at 8 a.m. on the beach in Redondo. Learn water safety, efficient board handling skills, basic surfing techniques and tricks. The class costs $120. A soft foam board is required and can be rented for $60. Adult and Youth Roller Hockey: There are still some openings for the South Bay T.I.D.E.S. Roller Hockey Club's Winter 2000 youth and adult leagues. The youth season began Jan. 29; adult play began Jan. 25. There are six divisions for boys and girls ages 5-17. Registration is $125 and includes a team jersey. The five adult divisions are broken down by skill level and include a women's division and over-30 division. The cost is $115 for the season.
