On the Waterfront

VENUS AND MARS: The good folks at the Beach Cities Health District invite the public to observe a late Valentine's Day at a workshop celebrating "the difference between men and women" 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16. The evening will feature "clever and witty discussions" with a male therapist and a female therapist. We're guessing that the man will continually interrupt the woman until she starts crying, then she'll refuse to say what she's crying about. Then he'll leave, and when she asks him where he's going, he'll yell "Out!" and slam the door. For more info call 374-3426 ext. 126...

UP, UP & AWAY: Hermosa Valley School eighth graders are building a hovercraft with funding from the Kiwanis. The students got the idea when they visited the Peterson Automotive Museum to race electrical cars they had built, and saw a hovercraft that some high school students had put together. Typically school hovercrafts make it just barely off the gymnasium floor, but maybe the Valley kids can use theirs to escape from math class...

HEAVY HITTER: Former South Bay Congresswoman Jane Harmon, who is poised to run against incumbent Steve Kuykendall for her old seat in November, will appear Tuesday on the Channel 8 government access TV show that businessman Roger Bacon hosts during intermission of the HB city council meetings. Bacon already has had Kuykendall on his show...

BEACH BINGO: Several stretches of South Bay beach show high levels of bacterial pollution last week, according to Heal the Bay's Beach Report Card. Dockweiler beach opposite the Hyperion Power plant and San Pedro's Cabrillo Beach, near the lifeguard tower, scored F's. Dockweiler at Grand Avenue got a D. Low grades reflect an increased chance of ocean users becoming ill. Dockweiler Beach at the end of Culver Blvd., Hermosa north of the Herondo storm drain and Redondo south of the pier all scored C's. All other local beaches scored A's or B's. Heal the Bay cautions ocean users not to swim or surf within 100 yards of any flowing storm drain for three days after a rainfall. After a rain, bacteria counts generally far exceed the criteria for closing the beach.

SUPER SUNDAY: People surfing for alternatives to the Super Bowl coverage might have spied the Baywatch Lifeguard Challenge on ESPN Sunday. The event, shot two summers ago, featured stars from the television show Baywatch, Olympic swimmers Gary Hall, Jr. and Amanda Beard, and Southern California lifeguards competing on two teams in traditional and not-so-traditional lifeguard competitions. When all was said and done, the Black team, with Manhattan Beach junior lifeguard national champion Paige Gallas, South Bay attorney/lifeguard Mark Young and lifeguard Erica Keithly, longtime girlfriend of Catalina Classic champ Tim Gair, dominated the Yellow team to win the event. The real winner was Camp Baywatch, a program designed to introduce inner city youth to swimming and other water sports.

BACK IN TIME: In 13 years of organizing the Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10 K, Conte Production's has never missed a start time - until last weekend. Sunday's races all started 10 to 15 minutes late. "When we used stop watches we always started on time. But this year we decided to time the races using a computer that reads the chips clipped to the runner's shoes. We had a problem with the computer at the start of the mile, and ran late the rest of the day," Mark Conte explained.

LIP SERVICE: Manhattan Beach's Deputy City Manager Dave Doyle underwent surgery on his upper gum line last week to repair an abscess. No word whether this will allow him to keep a stiff upper lip when dealing with the city's gadflies. ER
