Super Bowl 10K

The 22nd Annual Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce sponsored Super Bowl 10K run is expected to draw at least 10,000 participants. This year's 10K is being co-sponsored by Asahi Beer. The run will be held Super Bowl Sunday, Jan. 30, beginning in King Harbor at 6:30 a.m. The actual race begins shortly after 7 a.m. For more information call (310) 376-6911.

COG General Assembly

The South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) will hold a General Assembly Jan. 27, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Public Library at 303 N. Pacific Coast Highway. The event is for city officials throughout the South Bay, but business and community leaders are also invited to attend. The theme of the assembly is 'South Bay Cities: Facing Tomorrow Today.' Lead-off speaker for the event will be Col. Robert S. Cox, who will speak on "The Condition of the Aerospace Industry in the South Bay and Where It is Going." Keynote speaker will be Tal Finney, director of Policy for the Governor's office, who will discuss California Gov. Gray Davis' policies as they impact municipalities. Voter alert

If you haven't yet registered to vote, Monday, Feb. 7 is the last day to register to vote in the upcoming March 7 presidential primary election. The city clerk's office in Redondo, located at 415 Diamond St., Door C (corner of Diamond and Pacific Coast Highway) will be open until 8 p.m. on Feb. 7 to accommodate those who waited to the last minute to register.

Tax help

Free help with federal and state tax returns is available for older adults filing simple returns only. Volunteers trained by the state tax board and the Internal Revenue Service will be available by appointment on Thursdays beginning the first week of February. Those requesting assistance should bring tax instruction booklets and forms they received in the mail, along with records of income and deductions, including forms W-2 and W-2P. The sessions will be held at the Anderson Park Senior Center, located at 3007 Vail Avenue, Redondo Beach. Reservations are a must. They are available through 318-0650.

CERT training

The Redondo Beach Fire Department will begin a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training academy on Thurs., Feb. at 6:30 p.m. at Fire Station Number One at 401 S. Broadway in Redondo. The classes will be held for seven consecutive Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. It will conclude with a special Saturday session on April 1. Participants will learn disaster preparedness, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, first aid, damage assessment, light duty search and rescue and other disaster preparedness skills. Graduates will be certified to assist fire and police officials in times of need. The classes are free, but participants are required to pay for equipment they will take with them when they graduate. The cost is $25 per person or $40 per couple. Enrollment is limited. Registration is required. To register contact Tony Israel at 318-0663 ext. 2436.

History buffs

Tales and artwork

The publication The Creative Age 2000, a collection of short stories, poems and artwork by persons age 50 and up, will be on sale at a special reception and book signing to be held Feb. 5 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room of the Redondo Beach Main Library at 303 N. Pacific Coast Highway. Authors will read from their works. The Creative Age Project is sponsored by the City of Redondo Beach Senior and Family Services department. Hearing expert George Dearborn will hold a workshop on "Reading Your Audiogram" on Fri., Feb. 4, at 10:30 a.m. in the small conference room at the Knob Hill Community Center, located at 320 Knob Hill Ave., Redondo Beach. Dearborn will also discuss hearing devices. Users of audiograms are urged to bring the devices to expedite lessons on using them. Charity golf

The event is not until April 4, 2000, but now is the time to begin planning if you or your company want to sponsor competitors in the first annual D. R. Reich, Inc., One Club Charity Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the tourney will aid the South Bay School District elementary schools. Proceeds from the tournament will also be used to host a Los Angeles County "Job Bank" during the tournament. The job bank effort is aimed at putting persons receiving public assistance back to work. County workers will be in a booth at the tourney to help with the job bank effort. Tournament sponsorships range in cost from $250 to $1,200. For more information call Robin A. Dean at (310) 791-2631.

The tournament will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. Actual play will commence at 10 a.m. A luncheon and cocktails will be served from noon to 3 p.m., and presentations to winners will be made at 3:30 p.m.

The rules call for participants to choose any single golf club with which to play nine holes of golf. Success may depend on making the right choice for the club.
