Filters removing lead

Manhattan Beach Superintendent Jerry Davis reported last week that filters on drinking fountains installed throughout the district are removing lead from the water. Recent testing of the fountains resulted in the lowest lead readings possible, Davis said. October lead tests revealed higher than advisable lead levels in drinking water at five Manhattan Beach schools, leading the district to shut off drinking fountains and distribute bottled water.

Walk street petition filed

Last week, a group of residents living in the 500 block of Fourth Street filed a petition with the city clerk's office seeking to convert their block from a drive street to a walk street. With the exception of the 500 block and half a block just east of Highland Avenue, Fourth Street from Valley Drive to The Strand is a walk street. The 500 block, between Valley and Ingleside Drive, presently consists of a narrow drive street with street parking on its north side. City Manager Geoff Dolan said the matter would probably be referred to the Parking and Public Improvements Commission for study.
