About Town - Hermosa Beach

Super Jay

The Comedy & Magic Club, 1018 Hermosa Ave., is offering a great way to avoid and ignore the Super Bowl: a special performance by "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30. Tickets are $22, plus a two-drink minimum.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. for first-come, first-served seating. Opening for Leno will be the venerable Jimmy Brogan, head writer for the "Tonight Show," and comedian Jim Edwards, who also writes for the late night show.

Leno regularly uses the Comedy & Magic Club to try out monologue material for the big TV show but, obviously, an appearance on Super Bowl Sunday is rare. For information and reservations call (310) 372-1193.

Memorial fund-raiser

A memorial fund-raiser will be 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Dano's Beach Grille, 1320 Hermosa Ave., for noted water woman and civic leader Bernice "Bunny" Seawright, who passed away last week at age 92.

The fund-raiser will benefit the Hermosa Beach Historical Society and the Junior Lifeguards. Some of the money may be used to restore a vintage lifeguard dory.

For information call Seawright's daughter, Jill Curtin, at 372-3806, or Dano's at 937-5686.

Meet your sister

California Sen. Debra Bowen, D-South Bay, will be the keynote speaker as the 37th national convention of the U.S./Mexico Sister Cities Association comes to Hermosa Beach Friday through Sunday.

Hermosa's maintains a sister city relationship with Loreto, Mexico.

The convention will focus upon ecological issues, and Bowen's remarks, 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, will address "Protecting Environmental Quality in a Global Economy."

Bowen chairs the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee. She has authored numerous pieces of environmental legislation, including a recent law giving the California Integrated Waste Management Board more power to clean up illegal tire dumps.

For the past two years Bowen has pursued legislation that would require the state to construct buildings in a "green," energy-efficient manner.

Following her keynote address will be a speech by U.S. Rep. Steve Kuykendall, R-South Bay, who recently secured $500,000 in federal funds to help preserve the Bollona Wetlands near Marina del Rey.

"With the large number of well-established sister city relationships, we can share knowledge, identify problems that must be confronted, and develop strategies that will work to solve those problems," said Richard H. McCurdy, president of the Hermosa Beach Sister Cities Association.

Other convention speakers will include SolarQuest President Ron Senson, Doretta Winkleman, education director of the San Diego Natural History Museum, and James Aldinger, a spokesman for the local environmental group VOICE.

Entertainment will be provided by the Ballet de Folkorica, the Hermosa Valley School Choir and the Mira Costa High School Jazz Band.

The convention will open with a Friday welcoming party at Ein Stein's, and will close Sunday with pancake breakfast held by Hermosa firefighters.

For more information call 374-2044.

Helping the youth

Craig Casner of the South Bay's Casner Construction Co. last Wednesday gave $35,000 to the local Kiwanis for the organization's youth programs.

The Kiwanis help to fund a wide range of programs such as those offered by local schools and youth sports organizations, said Kiwanis board member Dallas Yost. ER
