OTW PHOTOCAP:

This tug and clamshell barge, out of danger from rouge boaters for the moment, is engaged in moving sand from the Marina del Rey Harbor to Redondo Beach. To dump it's load, the barge's bottom opens, dropping the sand offshore. After the sand is located in the vicinity of Redondo, it will be moved onto the beach.

ON THE WATERFRONT

MAYOR HAS NO CLOTHES: HB Mayor Julie Oakes on the city's wildly successful New Year's Eve fireworks bash that drew thousands to the Pier Plaza area: "It was awesome standing up there. I felt like the emperor or something"...

WHARF RAT REPORT: On Saturday, January 8th at 9:30 A.M., Wharf Rats were on the beach in Redondo watching the tug and clamshell barge dump the new imported sand just off the Topaz jetty. There were few boats out, but one 27-foot sailboat with a big orange buoy hanging off the bow seemed determined to ram the huge steel barge.

The tug let out mighty danger blasts with it's horn as her screws churned and the huge tug did her best to take evasive action with barge in tow.

Only moments from collision, a crewmember suddenly appeared on deck and swung the sailboat hard to port, narrowly missing the rear of the barge. Local Rats and Lifeguards know the sailor to be none other than the venerable "Biff".

The Baywatch was on scene in no time, and Biff got an impromptu refresher course on the rules of the road. Rats are still curious what Biff was doing below deck under full sail...

HOLDING IT: "We have refreshments in the back and restrooms. Please help yourself to the refreshments." Those were the words of Manhattan Beach Community Development Director Richard Thompson at the Metlox EIR scoping session last Tuesday evening. Residents took Thompson literally, chomping on cookies and drinking coffee and punch. But not one hand went up during the two-hour meeting from anybody needing to use the facilities...

POOH BEAR FIGHTS BACK: HB Friends of the Library say that their intermittent book sales are "in jeopardy" after raising more than $18,000 over the past decade. Why? Because the Ellay County folks decided that the sales at the HB branch should be moved to the children's section, to keep the aisles free. Foul, cry the HB Friends: "It is our view that the children's section be reserved for children, without a reduction of size, or sales of adult books not appropriate for children." Hmm. The Cat in the Hat does what?
