Whirry in top four

Mira Costa High School English teacher Dr. Marilyn Whirry is among four finalists being considered for National Teacher of the Year, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District announced last Wednesday. The winner will be announced in March. Whirry was honored in Sacramento last week as California's Teacher of the Year.

Sand Dune under review Jan. 24

The recommendations by the Sand Dune Park Neighborhood Committee to limit park hours and access will be part of the Parks & Recreation Commission's agenda Monday, Jan. 24, when it meets in the city council chambers beginning at 7 p.m. Channel 8 will televise the meeting live for those unable to attend.

School Boards tests council chambers

The next Manhattan Beach School Board meeting on Feb. 2 will take place in the Manhattan Beach City Hall's City Council chambers. The meeting, which is open to the public, begins at 6:30 p.m. It is the second school board meeting held at City Hall. The first occurred Wednesday. The School Board, which has agreed to televise its meetings, is contemplating whether to move them to the city council chambers on a permanent basis or to wire its boardroom for cablecasts.

Filters removing lead

Manhattan Beach Superintendent Jerry Davis reported last week that filters on drinking fountains installed throughout the district are removing lead from the water. Recent testing of the fountains resulted in the lowest lead readings possible, Davis said. October lead tests revealed higher than advisable lead levels in drinking water at five Manhattan Beach schools, leading the district to shut off drinking fountains and offer students bottled water.

Safety meeting at Middle School

Representatives of Beach Cities Community Awareness and Emergency Response will host a community meeting on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 6-9 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Middle School, 1501 Redondo Ave., Manhattan Beach. Chevron, Honeywell, El Segundo Power, Hyperion and the fire departments from El Segundo and Manhattan Beach will discuss present Risk Management Plans as well as chemical release scenarios and public safety information.
