Boys' Basketball (13-2): Lost Bay League opener at Peninsula last Wednesday, 59-55 in overtime. Ryan Mollins scored 21 points to lead Redondo, which played without injured star point Dijon Thompson. Edged Morningside 72-70 Friday, overcoming a 13-point halftime deficit. Andrew Zahn and Mollins combined for 35 points. Took out Compton Centennial 63-56 in the feature game of the Spot Up Classic Saturday at Compton College. Player of the Game Andrew Zahn led Redondo with 21 points, while Thompson added 16. Walter White added eight clutch second-half points for the Hawks. Survived second half scare to defeat South Torrance 66-46 Monday. White had a game-high 19 points to lead the Hawks.
Girls' Basketball (11-4): Ran past Peninsula 44-30 last Wednesday in Bay League opener. Ofa Tulikihihifo had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Redondo. See accompanying story. Outworked Morningside 67-56 Friday. Tulikihihifo posted 26 points in the win. Dominated South Torrance 61-31 Monday. Krista Areyan's 11 points paced Redondo.
Boys' Soccer (2-11): Lost 2-0 at Torrance last Wednesday. Lost 4-0 to South Torrance Friday. Lost 3-0 at Peninsula Monday.
Girls' Soccer (10-5): Kicked Torrance 4-1 last Wednesday behind two goals from Desiree Flint and one apiece from Lindsey Green and Lindsey Deierling. Upended South Torrance 1-0. Deierling's goal in the 32nd minute supported goalie Sarah Butterfield, who notched her seventh shutout of the season. Fell 4-1 in overtime to Peninsula Monday.
Wrestling (1-0): Defeated El Segundo in league opener last Thursday. Finished 39th out of 48 teams at the North Torrance Tournament of Champions held over the weekend.
Girls' Water Polo (13-5): Swam past El Segundo 10-6 last Wednesday. Sarah Valencia paced Redondo with three goals. Defeated San Marino 8-3 in opening round of Western Tournament last Thursday behind four goals from Valencia. Won two games in Western Tournament Friday, 5-0 versus Arcadia and 1-0 against Glendale. Malia Wagner starred in goal for the Sea Hawks. Finished fourth in the Western Tournament after dropping the semifinal match 6-3 to El Modena and the third-place match 8-7 to Cypress Saturday. Valencia scored three times in the semifinal loss.
Boys' Basketball (8-7): Handled Hawthorne 64-52 Friday. DeWayne Morris hit four treys en route to 25 points to lead Costa. Jacob Insler added 17 points and five steals. Stomped West Torrance 54-31 Monday. Morris continued his hot scoring, tossing in 17 points, while Archie Wiley added nine points and eight rebounds for Costa.
Girls' Basketball (7-8): Cruised past Hawthorne 47-11 Friday. Tara Whiteside had 17 points for the Mustangs. Pounded West Torrance 55-25 Monday. Hilary Stromath led the attack with 14 points, 15 boards and eight blocked shots.
Boys' Soccer (11-1-4): Opened Bay League play with 4-0 blanking of North Torrance last Wednesday. Joel Cambra had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs. Lost 1-0 to West Torrance Friday. Blanked Torrance 2-0 Monday behind goals from Derrick Schuster and Adam Norvell.
Girls' Soccer (14-2-1): Got past North Torrance 3-1 last Wednesday in Bay League opener. Shannon Cross scored the game winner. Edged defending league champ West Torrance 2-1 Friday. Cosette Smith's goal before halftime knotted the score and Kelly Blais' tally with three minutes left proved the difference. Smashed Torrance 7-0 Monday. Cross scored twice in support of goalie Chelsea McCarthy, who notched her seventh shutout of the season.
Wrestling (0-0): Placed 15th out of 48 teams at the North Torrance Tournament of Champions Saturday. Jon Cordero won the 215-pound class, beating a Monroe wrestler 7-0.
Girls' Water Polo (8-7): Blasted Loara 17-3 last Wednesday. Katay Kocsis paced Costa with six goals. Lost twice at Coronado tournament Thursday and Friday. Won twice Saturday, 8-5 against Rancho Buena Vista, and 16-3 versus Canyon Springs to capture seventh place. Kocsis had 11 goals in the two matches. Knocked out El Segundo 11-4 at home Tuesday. Kocsis had five goals and Robyn Suddeth three for Costa.

Blake gets All-Star start
Manhattan Beach resident Rob Blake of the Los Angeles Kings was named a starter for the 2000 NHL All-Star game in Toronto Feb. 6. It will be the star defenseman's third All-Star appearance, but his first as a starter. Blake leads all NHL defensemen in goals this year with 13.

Adult and Youth Roller Hockey: Sign-ups are in progress for the South Bay T.I.D.E.S. Roller Hockey Club's Winter 2000 youth and adult leagues, which begin this month. There are six divisions for boys and girls ages 5-17. Registration is $125 and includes a team jersey. The five adult divisions are broken down by skill level and cost $115 for the season.
