Tracy-Lyn Forney

School head named

Officials at Fusion Academy & Learning Center South Bay, a new, college-prep alternative private school in Hermosa, have named Tracy-Lyn Forney to head the school when its doors open in March.

The sixth-grade to 12th-grade school, part of American Education Group’s network of private schools, is modeled after Fusion Academy & Learning Center in San Diego. Fusion Academy uses a “personalized learning” model to help individual students through one-to-one teaching and mentoring.

Forney, of Redondo Beach, holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social behavior from University of California Irvine and has a decade of experience working with students with “learning differences,” school officials said. Most recently she served as director of Lindamood-Bell Learning Center in Westwood.

Fusion Academy & Learning Center South Bay is located at 1601 Pacific Coast Highway. An information meeting for parents will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 at Beach House Hotel, 1300 The Strand.

Walk of fame

The City of Hermosa Beach is accepting nominations for 2011 induction into the Surfers Walk of Fame on the municipal pier.

Applications are available at the Community Resources Department, City Hall, the local branch of the Los Angeles County Public Library next to City Hall, or online at hermosabch.org.

For more information call the Community Resources Department at 310-318-0280.

In 2010 James “Tiger” Makin was inducted into the Walk with a bronze plaque on the pier. Makin, 58, was honored for an aggressive style and daring approach that earned widespread attention to his big-wave prowess, and brought him to competitive heights including a fifth-place finish in the U.S. Surfing Championships.
