Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding a two-day double elimination AVP-style match play tournament on Saturday and Sunday, May 24-25 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. There will a prize pool of $1,500. The first place team receives $750 along with a free team entry ($650 value) to the Charlie Saikley 6-Man tournament to be held July 3 – Aug. 1 in Manhattan Beach. Beach volleyball classes are being offered for beginner, intermediate and advanced players throughout the summer on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. The six-session classes are held Thursdays (6:15-8 p.m.) beginning June 12 and Saturdays (9:30-11 a.m.) starting May 17. Main Instructor is Bill Sigler, a former AAA rated player and owner of the nation’s top volleyball apparel company Smack Sportswear, who has been teaching beach and indoor volleyball for over 18 years. All incoming Mira Costa freshman and transfer students are invited to attend the girls volleyball tryouts on Monday and Tuesday,, July 7-8 in the afternoon/evening (exact time/location TBA). A select number of freshman/incoming students will be invited to continue their tryout on July 9- 10. Rosters will be announced the evening of July 10. Kickball: An adult co-ed Kickball on the Beach League begins Wednesday, May 28 in Hermosa Beach. Teams require a minimum of four girls with total of ten players. Games in the eight-week season begin at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $500 per team or $45 per individual. Individuals must contact firstname.lastname@example.org to be placed on a team. Basketball: Registration is ongoing for the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball (HBYB) Summer League. Open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grades, the league consists of two one-hour games per week beginning on Monday, July 7 and running through Thursday, July 31. Girls ages 8-14 can learn the fundamentals of basketball while improving their skill level at the ProSkills Basketball Clinic held every Sunday from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Spectrum Athletic Club, 2250 Park Place in El Segundo. The head coach is former Mira Costa and UC Fullerton standout Megan Richardson who led the Mustangs to CIF and State finals and was a four-time All-Big West player and the third highest scorer in UC Fullerton history. Triathlon: Registration is ongoing for the 10th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon sponsored by California Health Plans. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8 at the Veteran’s Park/Pier area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $75 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $85 (ages 20-64), $115 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $65 and $95 for the relay. Add $5 after May 31. For more information, visit rbtriathlon.com.
