Surf and Turf: Sign-ups are still being accepted for the Fifth Annual Dig for Jimmy Surf and Turf contest, to be held Saturday from 8 to 4 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach pier. The benefit is the only tournament in the world that combines surfing and volleyball. Four-member teams will surf in the morning and play volleyball in the afternoon.$45. The South Bay Boardriders Club Contest #5 has been rescheduled. The King of the South Bay Surfing Championships presented by Spyder Surf will be held Saturday, May 10 at 42nd Street in El Porto. First heats start at 7 a.m. If already registered, check in as usual. Online entries are closed, however, beach entries will be available day of the contest in divisions with openings. Beach Tennis:West CoastBeach Tennis is hosting its Spring Fever Tournament Saturday and Sunday, May10-11 at 14th St. and The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Saturday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with singles competition followed by doubles amateur/advanced at 11:30 p.m. On Sunday, mixed competition begins at 12: 30 p.m. The tournament is sanctioned by International Federation of Beach Tennis and costs $30 for one event or $40 for multiple events. Running: The Sean Brock Foundation & CalCPA will be holding 5K and 10K Run beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 at Dockweiler State Beach. The Sean Brock Foundation provides resources, educational assistance and scholarships to the families of fallen or wounded service members. The non-profit organization is named in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Capt Sean Lee Brock, who put his education on hold in 2004 when he was deployed to Iraq for a second term. Brock died on Feb. 2, 2005, from injuries sustained in battle. Proceeds will be split between the Sean Brock Foundation and the CalCPA Los Angeles Chapter, which awards scholarships to local college/university students studying accounting. Basketball: Registration is ongoing for the Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball (HBYB) Summer League. Open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grades, the league consists of two one-hour games per week beginning on Monday, July 7 and running through Thursday, July 31. All registration will be done on-line at hbyb.net. Cost is $140 per player. A limited number of partial or full scholarships are available for families in need. The first and last sessions are for boys and girls ages 5-14; the second session is for boys only. Cost is $240 for full day camp; $125 for half day. Girls ages 8-14 can learn the fundamentals of basketball while improving their skill level at the ProSkills Basketball Clinic held every Sunday from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Spectrum Athletic Club, 2250 Park Place in El Segundo. The head coach is former Mira Costa and UC Fullerton standout Megan Richardson who led the Mustangs to CIF and State finals and was a four-time All-Big West player and the third highest scorer in UC Fullerton history. Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) is hosting tournaments on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 at Rosecrans Avenue in Manhattan Beach. All incoming Mira Costa freshman and transfer students are invited to attend the girls volleyball tryouts on Monday and Tuesday,, July 7-8 in the afternoon/evening (exact time/location TBA). A select number of freshman/incoming students will be invited to continue their tryout on July 9- 10. Rosters will be announced the evening of July 10. Exact time and location for tryouts will be posted on mustangvball.com as the date approaches.

 

Triathlon: Registration is ongoing for the 10th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon sponsored by California Health Plans. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8 at the Veteran’s Park/Pier area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $75 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $85 (ages 20-64), $115 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $65 and $95 for the relay. Add $5 after May 31.
