The Becker South Bay Boardriders contest, the third in the Boardriders’ five-contest series, took on the appearance of a full blown surf festival Saturday at 26th Street in Manhattan Beach.
Becker created a sculpture garden with 20 colorful, new boards, of all dimensions, while presenting sponsor Subaru Pacific gave away Becker boards and Billabong wetsuits in free raffles for the over 200 contestants.
John Lenninger, Becker’s store manager for over three decades, until his retirement two summers ago, reemerged to greet old friends. Former ET Surf shop rat James Hartzberg reemerged as Subaru Pacific’s general manager to hand out the raffle prizes.
Adding to the festival atmosphere were fun, two- to three-foot waves and sun, at least until early afternoon, when the wind and clouds moved in.
Another participant who reemerged at Saturday’s contest was former Mira Costa High star Dayton Silva. He missed the first two contests, but his victory on Saturday in the Open Men’s division moved him into third place in the series. Tied for first are Jamie Meistrell, who finished second to Silva, and Sean Burrell, who did not compete on Saturday.
Natalie Anzivino made it three wins in three Women’s Opens. Matching her record were Codee Stamis, Cody Purcell and Griffen Fields. Stamis has won the Juniors (18 and under) division in all three contests. Purcell has won all three Boys (14 and under) contests and Fields has won all three Assisted Micro-Groms contests. Stamis also stepped up to the Open Mens division and placed third.
Los Angeles County Lifeguard Tom Seth kept in shape by advancing to the finals in the Open Mens, Masters (40-49) and Open Longboard division.
Kieren Walls won the Groms division (12 and under); Israel Zelasko the Micro-Groms division (9 and under); Dave Shaefer the Open Longboard; Warren Kushner the Masters (40 to 49); Rodney Kay the Legends (50 and over); and Bethany Zelasco the Junior Girls (18 and under).
