Manhattan Beach pier’s parking lot will be transformed into a temporary public park this Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of PARK(ing) Day, an annual worldwide event to promote community and open space. The event, organized by Beach Cities Health District and Blue Zones Project, will include yoga and Tai Chi demos, bicycle decoration station for kids and sustainable landscaping and garden displays. Coffee and lemonade will be provided.
Mira Costa Hall of Fame
Eight distinguished Mira Costa High School alumni will be inducted Friday into the Hall of Fame. The breakfast reception begins at 8:30 a.m. in the library; the first induction assembly begins at 9:40 a.m., the second assembly at 11 a.m.
Inductees include the following alumni:
Dr. Antonio Carbayo (Class of 1978), a noted authority in family medicine who serves an under-served population in Santa Ana
Dr. Kendra Fleagle Gorlitsky (Class of 1969), a professor at USC and UCLA who serves uninsured populations in South and Central LA
El Roy Lang (Class of 1953), a former Mira Costa geography teacher and founder of a South Bay-based interscholastic surf program
Cliff Meidl (Class of 1984), a two-time Olympian and U.S. flag bearer and internationally-known motivational speaker
Casey Miner (Class of 1988), a 20-year army veteran and assistant professor at UCLA teaching leadership
Mike Silva (Class of 1979), a former “top gun” naval flight officer and chief of staff for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York
Danny Strong (Class of 1992), an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor and writer whose credits include “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Seinfeld,” “Game Change” and “Grey’s Anatomy”
