Volleyball: Southern California Volleyball Club (SCVC) Coach Tommy Chaffins will be holding clinics for 8th grade girls on Sundays Sept. 15 and 22 at the Redondo Union High School Gym from 3-5 p.m. SCVC will be holding girls clinics at Aviation Gym, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd. in Redondo Beach. Sixth through eighth graders meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 4 through Oct. 2 from 4-5:30 p.m.; 9th-12th graders meet on Sundays, Sept. 15, 22 and 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Walk-in’s are welcome for the two SCVC clinics. The California Beach Volleyball Association will be holding tournaments Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Play begins at 9 a.m. each day. Saturday’s action includes Men’s and Women’s AA competition. Featured Sunday will be Men’s B and Women’s A divisions. Cost is $42.50 per team. The Smackfest Beach Olympics on will be held on Saturday at the Hermosa Beach Pier. When teams are done playing a volleyball game in their pool, they will then compete against another team in their pool in activities such as Frisbee football, Bocce ball, bat races, Cornhole, etc. The team from each pool with the highest combined score advances to the playoffs. Beach Tennis: The Dealer.com Hermosa Beach Open beach tennis tournament will be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 27-29 adjacent to the Hermosa Beach Pier. Players in the men’s and women’s pro doubles, mixed doubles and singles divisions will vie for $10,000 in price money. There will also be a men’s and women’s amateur doubles tournament. Running: Registration is ongoing for the GI Joe Fall Pier-to-Pier Run/Walk held Saturday, Nov. 9 beginning at 7 a.m. at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Event includes t-shirts, finish line photos, prizes and a post-race party. Cost is $25 per runner through Sept. 20 ($35 Sept. 21-Oct. 18; $40 Oct. 19-31; $45 in November). Team prices are available. Cycling: The Dave Richardson Race Series, an annual event sponsored by the Redondo Beach-based South Bay Wheelmen, starts with a criterium on Monday, Sept. 16 and consists of eleven races. The races are a mix of criteriums, road races, and time trials. Only South Bay Wheelmen members can race and riders must have a United States Cycling Federation license to participate.
