The 56th Annual Labor Day Weekend 17th Street Volleyball tournament attracted 30 teams vying for a purse that rivaled this summer’s pro tournaments. Organizers teamed veteran “A” players such as former AVP players Scott Lane and Dave Swatec, with aspiring volleyball newcomers, such as the NBA’s Luke Walton and Richard Jefferson. Filling out the teams were 17th street regulars, including organizers John Star, Mark Paaluhi and former Manhattan Beach councilman Steve Napolitano.
Lane and teammates Eric Repo, Keith Brewer and Jay Gleason won the finals against a team lead by former Mira Costa captain Kelly Caldwell. Caldwell’s team included Todd Weatherly, Dan Martinez and Ian Martin.
Lane was presented the Lee Campbell MVP Cup by Will Campbell, whose grandfather was one of the tournament’s founders.
