A man suspected of burgling a Redondo Beach home and stealing a car from its driveway was shot and killed by a Long Beach Police officer Thursday morning.
Sgt. Aaron Eaton of the Long Beach Police Department said the fatal shooting occurred after the man fired a handgun at officers during a vehicle chase.
The man, who has been described as an adult male, allegedly burgled a home on the 1600 block of Morgan Lane in Redondo Beach sometime between 8:30 and midnight on Wednesday, according to Sgt. Shawn Freeman of the Redondo Beach Police Department. The suspect allegedly stole a white BMW and the keys to its ignition – the homeowners were out at the time – and fled via the southbound 405 freeway. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers chased the suspect but lost sight of his car when he exited at Studebaker Road. CHP contacted the Long Beach Police for assistance around 1 a.m. Thursday.
Long Beach Police tracked down the stolen vehicle and initiated a pursuit, Sgt. Eaton said. The driver of the car they were chasing lost control and crashed into a vacant residence on the 6400 block of Keynote Street, police said. He proceeded to display a handgun and fire at the officers chasing him, police said. One of the officers shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt. Eaton said detectives from the Long Beach Police Department homicide detail initiated an investigation, which is still underway. A separate investigation is being conducted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
