The scene along Herondo Avenue on the Hermosa Beach-Redondo Beach border Monday evening looked like a cross between the Space Shuttle being moved to the California Science Center and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Two Chevron 500,000 pound coke drums, each 100 feet long and 28 feet in diameter, were moving up the street from Hermosa Avenue to Pacific Coast Highway under police escort at under four miles per hour. The enormous tractors carrying the drums were steered by a driver walking at the rear and carrying a remote control no larger than ones used to drive RC model cars.
The tractors left King Harbor, where the drums had been offloaded from barges, at about 10:30 p.m. and reached a staging area on Pacific Coast Highway about an hour later. The drums are scheduled to continue their journey to the Chevron El Segundo Refinery on Wednesday. The drums arrived by sea early Monday morning.
