Redondo’s boys soccer team making most of opportunities

After earning a wild-card berth and a 2-1 win over Chaminade, Redondo Union’s boys soccer team eliminated defending CIF champion and sixth-seeded Ventura 3-2 Friday to advance to the second round of the Division 1 CIF Southern Section Championships.

Down 1-0 in the first half, Ryan Wadhams tied the score for the Sea Hawks who went ahead on a Dustin Herold goal in the 60th minute. Dagmay Demsas scored the game winner in the 75th minute and Griffin Thomas recorded six saves in the victory.

Redondo (15-9-4) will travel to Claremont (13-7-1) on Wednesday. All games with the exception of the finals are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. unless mutually agreed upon by both teams and cleared by the CIF-SS office.

Bay League champion and fourth-seeded Palos Verdes (20-2-3) shutout St. Francis 6-0 and will host Damien (7-8-7) in a 3 p.m. second-round game Wednesday.

West Torrance (10-9-4) edged Capistrano Valley 1-0 and will play at second-seeded Loyola (25-2-3) on Wednesday.

In Division 4, South Torrance (11-7-6) defeated South Bay rival Bishop Montgomery 2-1 and will play at Perris (13-7-5) in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

North Torrance (10-11-2) had its season end with a 2-1 loss at West Ranch.

Ninth-seeded Chadwick (7-1-5) beat visiting Thacher 3-1 and will travel to Environmental Charter in Lawndale (6-3) for a quarterfinal contest.

In Division 7 action, second-seeded Vistamar (11-4-1) shutout Grace Brethren 3-0 and will play at Milken Community (11-5-3) while No. 4 Serra (12-2-1) routed Newbury Park Adventist 7-0 and will travel to Nordhoff (11-9-1) on Wednesday.
