Hermosa Beach police news: lottery scam, stolen package, sword in the street

Lottery scam

Unknown suspects called an elderly victim on Jan. 29 around 2 p.m. The suspect told him that he won two million dollars from the “Danish Lottery.” The suspects wanted $400 before they would give up the winning check. The victim called the police. The HBPD warns residents to tell elderly family and friends about this scam. According to the HBPD, it is very common and goes unreported due to the embarrassment of the victims.

Stolen shipment

A USPS package was stolen from the front yard of a house on the 1000 block of 5th street on Jan. 29., police said.

Sliding problems

Unknown suspects entered through a rear sliding door on the 900 block of Monterey on Jan. 30. According to HBPD, they stole miscellaneous personal items. Police warn residents to install auxiliary locking devices to sliding doors so they are not as easily forced open.

Sword play

According to the HBPD, officers responded to a call of a subject swinging a sword about on the 500 block of Pier Ave on Feb. 1. It was soon discovered that the sword was fake and the suspect, whom police suspected was mentally ill, was arrested.
