The decision to hold the SBBC Becker Surf Contest proved to be the right one, despite the small surf, which was blamed on the "Balzer Curse." Just days before the contest Balzer resigned as contest director from the club he founded in 2009.

Fresh Brothers’ Adam Goldberg credited his “mentor” Michael Greenberg of Skechers, his “fixer” restaurateur Michael Zislis (who helped Fresh Brothers land an LAX location) and the broader Manhattan Beach community for the meteoric success of his family’s pizza company.
Goldberg’s thank-yous came during his acceptance of the “Best of Manhattan” award during the Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards dinner at the Manhattan Beach Marriott on Oct. 8.
Since opening their first store in 2008, Goldberg, his wife Debbie, and his brothers Adam and Michael have expanded to 14 stores, with plans to expand into neighboring states.
The Bob Meistrell Local Legend Award was presented to Judy and John Peetze for their work with this year’s Special Olympics. The two formed a committee that hosted Special Olympians from Hungary and Nepal.
